God Is With Us
David Francis
New year, new thoughts about God? How does ‘Emmanuel’ help us?
Last year I was “shaken but not stirred!” because central to the Christmas story is that God is with us!
They will call him Emmanuel (which means “God with us”)
Matthew 1:23
My shaking occurred during a recent, interesting conversation with some Christians friends. Consequently my biblical world view was suddenly thrown into sharp contrast with theirs.
There wasn’t a lot of time to go into every nuance of understanding but, after, I became energised to take a fresh look at things I had taken for granted for the last 40 years or so.
As I reflected on what I perceived were quite large challenges to my previously-held views, and knowing I had this article to write, I wondered what basic principles needed to be applied as I grappled with these ‘stirring’ thoughts?
Three things came to mind: fear not, study and stay peaceful.
I’m often ‘Corporal Jones like’, eccentric, rambling and out of step, but the infamous “Don’t panic Mr Mainwaring!” sounded in my inner ear, though more so the Holy Spirit. Reminding me that ‘God is with us’, emphasis on the plural. Fear not, ‘be reet’ (in Yorkshire accent)
For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.
Matthew 18:20
Our conversations were made safe by the presence of our Saviour. I felt relaxed and began to enjoy the journey.
As iron sharpens iron so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
The alternative viewpoints inspired me to review my old deductions, and its proving to be most revealing and exhilarating. I love a good God book!
I find my mind being renewed as I yield to the second point to consider in my ‘stirrings’.
Study to show yourself approved unto God.
2 Timothy 2:15
This general principle should apply in all aspects of biblical explanation; we have to really look into things and try to objectively see all sides before settling on your own.
The internet can help, but I find books provide more integrity - as they pass through many more reviews by peers & other strictures than easily-posted or worse, fake social media articles.
Thirdly, as I continue relating, I’m reminded to be peaceful.
As I continue into this New Year how should I coexist with my fellow Christian friends, even though our thinking might vary? Yes we can disagree, but don’t become disagreeable.
To have a worthy walk & discussion at the same time takes humility, gentleness and patience. I have to persist in Godly affection, trying to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 3:19- 4:6)
Knowing that God loves us all helps me love others, especially those with different viewpoints.
I’m glad to have the opportunity to revisit my previous world-view as, in so many ways, it reinvigorates my Christian journey.
For all time “God is with us”, not just for 2025.
‘Be reet!’
