What’s Your Source?

Joy Revie

Ian and I have lived in Boroughbridge for 25 years. We love its rural feel and being close to the river Ure.

We often follow the river up into Wensleydale and walk in the hills round Leyburn and Hawes, so much in fact, that we decided to try and find the source of the Ure. So we got out the maps and started planning a route.

Finally, in October we did!!

It was a great day. We had a real sense of adventure as we first trekked alongside a reasonably sized river and then watched as it reduced to a small stream, then just a trickle that you could step over. That mighty river that flows through the Dales was just a trickle at our feet!

It got me thinking: What is my source? What gives me energy and meaning? What guides my thoughts and decision makin?. What gives me peace and happiness?

As usual, when I am out in nature, I feel close to God. Surrounded by the majesty of creation, I can’t help but worship and be in awe of Him. A few days later I read this passage :

From one man, Adam, he made every man and woman and every race of humanity, and he spread us over all the earth. He sets the boundaries of people and nations, determining their appointed times in history. He has done this so that every person would long for God, feel their way to him, and find him - for he is the God who is easy to discover. It is through him that we live and function and have our identity; just as your own poets have said, “Our nature comes from him”.
Acts 17: 26-28

God is my source… there are no limits to the measure of his desire for me to flourish and be fruitful. But the choice to connect to this source in every area of my life is mine.

When I connect with him there is life and vitality but, when I disconnect, my life begins to show dryness and neglect. It's a choice. We are made in his image, with all the resources of heaven to call on. What an inheritance!

The Source of our faith was born a helpless babe in a cow shed. As we step into the Christmas season, let's remember how this baby grew, taught us how to live well as he walked among us, and ultimately changed our lives forever.

Through his teachings in the Gospels and his ultimate sacrifice, we can be constantly replenished now with the Holy Spirit.
